PolyTurf's research and development team and residents of a forward thinking, eco friendly City of Oakland, California set a new standard with the installation of the first PolyTurf Champion Sport "Greenfield".  Our latest achievement provides the optimum choice for a multi-purpose, two layer, non infill system on a sports and recreation artificial grass application. 


Champion Sport Artifical Turf with Cool Reflect Technology


The Champion Sport Cool Reflect  synthetic grass blades are manufactured with an exclusive yarn fiber that reduces the emittance of radiant heat by 20 degrees.

Thermal comfort is a critical benefit to the athletes and their ability to maintain peak performance while practice or a game is in progress. Lower temperatures on the field results in better focus, more time for play, and lessens the likelihood of injury and burns.

Also, the environmental advantage is that the land surface temperature is lower than standard artificial turf options. Our awareness of global warming is why this contribution to the diminishment of the heat island effect is a pivotal development in synthetic grass manufacturing for the future. 


Rubberway Pervious Pavement Sub-Base

An advancement in synthetic turf sub-base preparations is the resilient porous rubber pavement base layer, also known as Rubberway Pervious Pavement. Seen on synthetic sports applications in the past, rubber in-fill is distributed between the blade fibers to hold them upward and prolong the life of the field, as well as offers a cushion to break a fall. However, the use of rubber infill has many downsides. For example, for the players, it can cast off a spray of infill into eyes or mouths during a game. Also, the higher temperatures during play can cause burns or heat stroke. From an environmental standpoint, urban run off from the field could be hazardous to storm drain filters. Recycling turf with an infill is complicated and almost impossible due to the separation process and high costs involved.

Rubberway Pervious Pavement  incorporates a  granulated recycled tire bound with a polyurethane binder to create a level sub surface that is firm, yet pliable. The system is tested to provide rapid drainage, optimal stability, while simultaneously offering a safety element that will not compromise the players physical health when used beneath synthetic grass on a sports field.

Life Cycle Management


A full life cycle management program is an extra benefit of the PolyTurf Green Field specification. The removal and disposal of the field has been taken into great consideration when designing this system. PolyTurf has taken the responsibility of finding solutions for recycling the products we manufacture. Thus, the elimination of sand and rubber has eased the process of removal and recycling of the grass. The weight of the turf is lighter and easier to relocate, and also, now fully recyclable. Costs for installation, maintenance, and removal are also largely reduced by this  specification that was written with the intent to anticipate lower initial and future expenditure for cities, schools, and private facilities. 

Eligible for LEED Credits


Intent: Reduce Heat Islands (thermal gradient differences between developed and undeveloped areas) to minimize the impact on microclimate and human and wildlife habitat.

  • Requirement- Provide any combination of the following for 50% of the site landscape: Shade (within 5 years occupancy), paving materials with a Solar Reflectance Index of at least 29, open grid pavement system.
  • Permeability- Allows water penetration through the surface which both irrigates and reduces run-off problems. 
  • Reflectance- A range of shades means that the reflectance values vary but are similar to that of real grass when watered and green. 
  • Thermal Emittance- The same range of colors affects the thermal emittance of the surface and can be selected for the particular project requirements.
